Endeavor Air Mechanic Robert Nelson's Two-Decade Journey After Graduation
It's been an interesting journey for Robert Nelson. Although life has taken him down a few paths, there’s one thing he’s always known: He has a passion for aviation. Now more than two decades later, Robert is actively fulfilling his passion in a role he is happy with through retirement.
Before training with us, Robert served in the Navy as an aviation electrician’s mate. The transition from military to civilian aviation wasn't without its challenges, but Robert’s passion for the industry drove him forward, leading him to complete technical training.79
He's now marking his 21st year at Endeavor Air as one of their lead mechanics.
The Role of a Lead Mechanic: More Than Meets the Eye
Robert’s role as a lead mechanic isn't confined to fixing what's broken. He's entrusted with strategizing and implementing game plans for tackling complex tasks in the hangar and ensuring everyone stays on task. It's a challenging role that requires a keen eye for detail and unwavering commitment.
When talking with Robert, his love for aviation is apparent. His stint in the Navy ignited his passion for working on aircraft. Upon leaving the Navy, he found himself missing the thrill and challenges that come with aviation. Thankfully, he was able to rekindle this passion in the Aviation Maintenance program and later Endeavor Air.
“I’ve always liked working on aviation. I loved it in the Navy... and then I was glad I got back into it because I missed the aircraft and the challenges of it,” says Robert.
The Training Experience: Blend of Theory and Practical Learning
Reflecting on his training, Robert recounted how the experience differed from his military training. While the Navy focused more on specialization, training with us provided exposure to a broader range of topics. The shift from classroom learning to hands-on training was a welcome change for him, preparing him well for his current role.
“In school, you had a little bit of lab time to get your hands on different components and everything to see what they’re doing,” Robert tells us. “And then once you’re here, it’s just all in.”
Advancing in Aviation: Eagerness and Teamwork Are Key
To anyone aspiring to build a career in aviation, Robert encourages eagerness, attention to detail and readiness to lend a helping hand. He believes that these qualities can help one climb the ladder in this industry.
For anyone interested in aviation maintenance, Robert recommends going to school and earning their A&P license.
“I definitely would recommend... it’s the best way I know you can go through,” says Robert.
What Robert loves most about the aviation industry are the diverse backgrounds of the people he works with, and the opportunities for growth.6 From quality control to line maintenance and heavy-duty work, there's a role for everyone in this industry.
“Don’t be afraid to get in there and help other people with what they’re working on,” Robert advises. “There’s always something to do, so just showing that you’re motivated can help you move up a long way."
