UTI’s Steering and Suspension Systems course provides students with the essential skills to diagnose, service and repair critical vehicle systems that affect handling, comfort and safety.
What You'll Learn in the Automotive Steering and Suspension Systems Course
The course utilizes a combination of hands-on training and classroom education that helps students become well-prepared to address a number of steering and suspension system concerns.18 Students will be able to perform alignments and diagnose and service independent suspensions systems, steering columns, power assist steering systems and performance suspensions systems.

Subjects focused on in this class include:
Performing Vehicle Alignments
Students are taught to conduct precise vehicle alignments, ensuring proper wheel angles for optimal handling and tire longevity. This includes understanding alignment specifications and using advanced alignment equipment.
Diagnosing and Servicing Independent Suspension Systems
The course covers the operation and maintenance of independent suspension systems, including troubleshooting issues that affect ride quality and stability. Students will gain the skills needed to repair or replace components such as control arms, ball joints and bushings.
Understanding Steering Columns
Students will explore the mechanics of steering columns, gaining knowledge on how to diagnose and repair common issues such as excessive play, noise or difficulty turning. This includes servicing both manual and power-assisted steering columns.
Working with Power Assist Steering Systems
Steering and suspension systems training helps students understand power assist steering systems, including hydraulic and electric power steering (EPS). Students are taught how to diagnose and repair components like pumps, racks and hoses for efficient and responsive steering.
Exploring Performance Suspension Systems
Students will gain insights into performance suspension systems. They’ll be taught how these systems differ from standard setups and how to optimize them for superior handling and stability.
Diagnostic Tools and Techniques
Hands-on training includes the use of industry-standard diagnostic tools to test and troubleshoot steering and suspension systems.18 Students will develop confidence in using specialized equipment to ensure accurate and efficient repairs.
