Typically, a six-hour day has students spending time in the lab, as well as completing online coursework that takes about two to three hours.

If you need to hold down a job during the day, being able to complete your coursework and attend classes at night can make this easier. Choosing to work during the day could allow you to earn an income that can help pay for mechanic night school. This is a great option for those who want to reduce their need for financial aid or student loans.10
Not only can this flexibility impact a student’s finances, but it can also be helpful if they have other obligations during the day, such as taking care of children.
Don’t have a job yet, but want to start on a path toward a mechanic career while training as a student? Talk to our Career Advisors to explore your options!
Night classes could also offer the benefit of smaller class sizes, since enrollment for daytime classes is typically higher. Smaller class sizes offer more time for one-on-one communication with experienced instructors and fellow classmates on a similar career journey.
Freedom during the day can also mean that you have more time to spend studying coursework and preparing for class later that night. Not having to head to class first thing in the morning can allow you to carve out some time to go over the course material and have it fresh in your mind.

Diesel mechanic night classes cover a variety of essential topics, including engine repair, fuel systems and electrical diagnostics. Students will also learn about hydraulics, transmission systems and maintenance practices to prepare them for real-world challenges they’ll encounter in the field.
Automotive mechanic night classes teach key industry topics, such as brake systems, electronic systems, and steering and suspension service and repair. While enrolled, students are taught skills that employers in the industry are looking for.
The Diesel Technology program at UTI can be completed in approximately 45 weeks, while the Automotive Technology program lasts 51 weeks.7 Night classes are available for both programs on select campuses. This allows students to gain hands-on training during the evening, making it a practical choice for those with daytime commitments.
One of the most common admissions requirements for enrolling in auto and diesel mechanic night school is having a high school diploma or GED—or other equivalent documentation. Otherwise, in terms of experience requirements for UTI, you don’t need any prior experience or skills to enroll!
Students in UTI’s diesel and automotive night classes can expect hands-on instruction throughout the duration of their program, with roughly half of their class time dedicated to practical lab work.18 This immersive experience ensures that students can apply theoretical knowledge to real equipment and scenarios, preparing them effectively for the workforce.1
